Wholesome Wednesday |Encouragement from our elderly

“The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.”  Andy Rooney

There is a sweet gentleman that visits the office where I work a few times a year and every time he will leave his business card with an encouraging Bible verse written on it (and a few chocolates – I like him already! :)). Even if I am not there, he leaves it stuck in the door.

On a couple of occasions, he has sat down and shared some of his story with me as well.

He has been through some stuff in his life, as we all have.

One thing I am so thankful to have learned early in life (‘early’ as in my 20’s – before that, I was like any other teenager, no one knew more than me) but I learned to listen to those who have been through life already. Ones that are so wise and such precious souls.

I continue to learn how big their hearts are and how strong they are in the midst of so much weakness. I listen as if it were my grandparents telling someone else what they wished for their grandchildren and their great-grands (me and my family). I always walk away encouraged and refreshed, feeling a sense of reassurance.

I have noticed that the elders that I seem to be drawn to are Christians with strong marriages and that to me is something I long for. Not that they haven’t struggled, because we all do – but that they have made it through time and time again. I agree with Andy Rooney, the best classroom is at the feet of an elder.

I want to share some of the verses that gentleman has left with me.

Psalms 111:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.
His praise endures forever.”

Romans 5:1-8 “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,  through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

Eph 1:3-7 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,  having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.”

2 Corinthians 2:14 “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.”

Romans 8:28 “ And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

I hope you have a wonderful and encouraging Wednesday. Love and appreciate someone elderly today.
